Gabion mattresses are manufactured from hexagonal shaped double twisted gauge steel wire mesh. They usually have the shape of a cube of different dimensions – with width starting at 2.00m and height ranging between 0.17 and 0.30m. The construction is similar to that of common gabions though lighter and more flexible. The edges are reinforced with wire of larger diameter than that of the mesh. They are used for slope stabilization, protection of the bottom of a slope and river bed lining and generally in milder water flow conditions than gabions are used.
